Korkut self-propelled air defense gun system, is ground based short-range air defense system developed and manufactured by Turkish Defense Industries Aselsan and FNSS. Its primary function is to replace obsolete M42 duster 40 mm gun system in Turkish inventory and strengthen low altitude air defense capabilities of Turkish armed forces.

Specifications

Range: 4 Km.

Gun:  twin barrel 2×35 mm Oerlikon KDC-02.

Rate of fire: 1100 rpm.

Platform: ACV-30 tracked armored vehicle.

Battery: 3-gun system and one command and control center.

Background

Korkut SPAAG development began in 2011 and primarily contract was awarded to Aselsan. Aselsan and FNSS on 25 June 2011 signed contract, Aselsan was in lead as primary contractor and FNSS as subcontractor. Test of system began in 2015 and concluded successfully in December 2015. Serial production started in 2016, and thence started the production of first order of 40 Korkut weapon system and 13 command and control systems ordered by Turkish armed forces.

Technical Specifications

System platform: Korkut is based on ACV-30 armored tracked chassis which powered by 600 hp engine and gives top speed of 65 km/h , two jet packs puts it in a complete amphibious category, which can float in waters with 6 km/h speed. This in turn provides efficient and satisfied mobility along with any mobile unit. It provides protection from small arms, blast splinters & mines with STANG 4569 level 4 and STANG 4569 level 2 protection standard.

Weapon station: Korkut weapon station which consists of unmanned twin barrel Oerlikon 35 mm KDC-02 manufactured by MKEK defense industry and is fully automated gun. It is situated right on top of ACV-30 and is fully stabilized which thus enables it to hit target while on the move. It has 400 rounds with 200 on each cannon.

Being fed with link-less automatic reloading system and it takes 15 sec to reload another type of ammunition. It fires airburst ammunition built by Aselsan along with conventional ammunition, and fires Practice-Tracer target (PT-t) rounds. Airburst rounds are quite effective against any threat due it disperses impact on target and is best feature of Korkut SPAAG System.

Weapon and Control Station: Weapon and Control Station is based on same ACV-30 and performs series of function. From search to track, detection, identification, and weapon assignment. It comprises of 3D search radar and Electro Optical & TV sensor and laser range finder. 3D search radar comes with two different types and thus forms two different forms of Korkut SPAAG System which are following.

  1. Korkut KKA: Korkut KKA have Ku-band 3D search radar mounted on its top and gives range of 30 km.

Strategic Role

Korkut SPAAG aims initially to replace old Vietnam war era air Defense gun system. It also operates with mechanized division, and mobile troops unit from modern airborne threats such as Rockets, Missiles, Cruise Missiles, low flying aircrafts, UAVs, and Helicopters.

Recent clashes of Armenia and Azerbaijan, UAVs have posted a great deal of threat to armored cores and mobiles units. Not only mobile units also state of the art SAM system are having problems from this new modern threat. This is due to fact of rapid increase in electronic warfare tech and development in current era which made Electronic systems prone to more electronic warfare techniques such as jamming etc. Thus, Korkut SPAAG System is ideal for such occasions to deal with low altitude and range threats.

Korkut SPAAG along with MANPADS is good punch against low flying threats in intense EW environment, to protect highly crucial mobile units and mechanized units and important strategic locations.
