Alama Iqbal wrote these words for those men who are brave and are ready to sacrifice themselves for their cause. One such great man of honor was Captain Roohullah Shaheed who embraced shahadat on 24 October 2016. On this unfortunate day, the enemies of state attacked the police-training academy in Quetta. In the gun battle that followed the attack, many innocent police cadets were killed mercilessly. Enforcements were dispatched to the location and SSG answered the call in these times of crisis, one of the soldier in the team of SSG commandos was Captain Roohullah, he was a veteran of many such attacks, he participated in the operational team during the Bacha Khan University attack in Charsadda in January 2016. As a professional and experienced soldier, he started his operation of clearing the site with his team. As gunfire raged on outside the barracks, groups of police recruits were huddled under charpoys in the darkness waiting to be rescued. It is standard procedure for recruits to hide under their beds and not show themselves during such an attack. One suicide bomber entered the same room and hid under a charpoy. Police cadets were not aware of his presence in the room because it was very dark. Suddenly, Capt. Roohullah barreled his way into the barracks. He asked, ‘Are you our people?’ He kept asking the same thing repeatedly, He had a light in front of his weapon, which made him undistinguishable for trapped police cadets.
The recruits thought Roohullah was the suicide bomber calling out to them and remained silent. Then the young captain identified himself as an SSG officer. Now cadets were sure that the person calling them is one the soldiers who were sent to rescue them only then the cadets told him that we were from the police, and the captain asked cadets to come out. Put your hands up, shouted the captain as it is standard operating procedure. Following orders, all the people in the room came out from under their beds one by one, except one. Roohullah noticed and yelled out, asking the person to show themselves. He moved swiftly across the room and kicked the charpoy over to reveal an attacker, before anyone could make a move, the captain threw himself onto the suicide bomber and moments later, the attacker detonated his explosive-laden jacket. Nobody was aware about what happened after the blast, cadets in the room sustained injuries. They were knocked out and came to their senses several minutes later.
When the cadets finally came to their senses only then they realized that one of the person hiding in the room was a suicide bomber and he was about to detonate himself but Captain Roohullah gave the supreme sacrifice of his own life and saved the lives of many innocents in that room. He threw himself onto the suicide bomber without any hesitation or without thinking about his own life, the only thing on his mind was his mission and safety of the police cadets he was sent to save. Captain Roohullah used his own body to cushion the blast and protect the cadets. Only few people are so daring and are ready to put their own lives on the line to protect others. Pakistan Army is full of many such soldiers who are dedicated and ready to give the supreme sacrifice of their own lives to protect the lives of the fellow countrymen.
Dr Habibullah Mohmand, Roohullah’s father, said his eldest son was going to be married after three months. He remembers Roohullah as “a lovely son”.
Roohullah was 27 years old when he embraced shahadat, he was born in Peshawar’s Muradabad area on May 5, 1989.
He was the eldest of four children and has two brothers and one sister. Roohullah appeared in his Matriculation exams from Islamia Collegiate School in 2007 and received a distinction. He did his FSC from Government Degree College Peshawar in 2009 and received another distinction.
His parents wanted him to become a doctor, but he preferred to join the army as it was his passion. He was commissioned by the Pakistan Army in 2012 and participated in various counter-terror operations in South Waziristan Agency.
Roohullah was nominated for a Tamgha-i-Jurat by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif to commemorate his bravery and his sacrifice. He was performing duty as an anti-terrorism platoon commander at the time he was killed.
