At 4:15pm on July 11, 1995, Bosnia’s Srebrenica – a United Nations-protected safe zone where about 50,000 Bosniaks had sought refuge – fell to advancing Serb forces, who claimed the town for a Greater Serbia.
Bosnian Serb forces along with paramilitary forces killed more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica. International tribunals later classified the killings as a genocide. UN peacekeepers, in what had been declared a UN “safe area”, did nothing as the violence raged around them.
The Serb forces used bulldozers to throw the bodies in numerous mass graves. Their remains are still being searched for.
About 30,000 Bosniak women and children were deported in just two days. Thousands of women and girls were raped.
Bosnia marks the 25th anniversary of a genocide committed by Serb forces in Srebrenica, in which Bosnian Serb forces systematically killed thousands of young and adult Muslim men because of their faith.
In 2017, the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted Mladic on 10 charges, including genocide and crimes against humanity. But others of them who were directly or indirectly involved in the massacre still hold key positions in Serbia’s political and economic spheres.
Role of Pakistan and ISI
Pakistan diplomatically and politically raised voice for the Bosnian people. But apart from political and Diplomatic support which was much more than arms support because of UN arms embargo. Many Bosnians migrated to Pakistan. But apart from that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) ran an active covert military intelligence program during the Bosnian War 1992-1995 under the command of General Javed Nasir. ISI with the help of Saudi Arabia financial support, provided weapons to the Bosnian Army in spite of the UN arms embargo. ISI airlifted anti-tank weapons and missiles. Pakistan became the fourth largest contributor of troops to the UN peacekeeping forces in Bosnia and pledged to keep its soldiers there to protect Bosnian Muslims and confront the Serbs.
