Mohafiz is an internal security vehicle designed for Pakistan law enforcement agencies and military armored jeep needs, based on the chassis of commercial vehicle land rover defender. This was manufactured by HIT that has good mobility / visibility and decent space to move around in with an armor protection B7 level. It has a welded Aluminum Armor hull along with Ballistic Steel with ricochet angles all round. This provides protection against armor piercing small arms fire up to 7.62x5mm caliber (It is not designed to survive RPG or AT rifle rounds).
Mohafiz is given a 4.2-liter, 8-cylinder turbodiesel engine (111hp @4,000rpm) coupled to a manual transmission with five forward and one reverse gear and a two-speed transfer case. Coupled to a manual transmission with five forward and one reverse gear plus a two-speed transfer case, for power steering. A 4.5-liter engine is also available in option. The Mark III is given a new Water-cooled Turbo-Diesel inter-cooled, 8 cylinders 4.2 liters rated for 150 KW/200HP @3400 rpm.
The tires are of Run-flat type, and a heavy-duty suspension is fitted, with hydraulic power assisted brakes. Turning circle radius is about 6,9 m and Ground clearance 23 cm. Wheelbase (2,98 m) allows to cross small ditches and the vehicle can ford about 60 cm of water. There are also automatic fire extinguishers in the engine and troop compartments. An air conditioner is also standard and for crowd control, the turret is fitted with a public address system and siren. The vehicle also came with the original Land Rover toolbox, like lifting and towing hooks
During 1990s, HIT started design work on a new 4 × 4 Internal Security (IS) vehicles called the Mohafiz. This was first shown in mid-November 2000 and in December 2000 started extensive trials.
It had good mobility and speed. Powered by a 4.2 litre diesel engine coupled to a manual transmission with five forward and one reverse gear and a two-speed transfer case. If required, a more powerful 4.5 litre diesel engine could be installed to provide a higher power-to-weight ratio.
The Mohafiz APC has an all-welded aluminum armor body that provides the occupants with protection from armor piercing ammunition (Level B7 7.62×51 ap rounds) and shell splinters. The fully enclosed engine compartment is at the front with the crew compartment extending to the rear.
The commander and driver are seated at the front and provided with bulletproof windows to their front and a forward opening door with a bulletproof window in the upper part of either side. These bulletproof windows are covered by wire mesh screens.
Bulletproof windows are provided in the sides and rear of the troop compartment. A total of ten firing ports are provided to allow rifles and other small arms to be used from within the vehicle. Mounted on the forward part of the roof is a manually operated one-person turret armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun and/or a tear gas grenade launcher and a two-part roof hatch which opens left and right.
To the immediate rear of the turret are two forward opening roof hatches although the design of the vehicle is flexible so that various types of roof hatch arrangement are possible.
